Bolo Revival: The Modern Twist on a Classic Accessory

Bolo Revival: The Modern Twist on a Classic Accessory

dainty layered sterling silver adjustable box chain necklace

Western wear has maintained its status as a timeless fashion trend. Its enduring appeal lies in its blend of rugged authenticity and classic Americana, elements that continue to resonate across generations. Key pieces like denim jeans, cowboy boots, and leather jackets have remained wardrobe staples, transcending trends and seasons. Western wear's versatility allows it to be reinterpreted and adapted to modern styles while still retaining its iconic status. The cyclical nature of fashion often brings Western elements back in vogue, proving its lasting influence and relevance in the fashion world. Our favorite western accessory flies more under the radar than your standard cowboy hat. It's the bolo tie.

Evolution of the Bolo

John Travolta in Pulp Fiction

The bolo tie traces its roots to the early 20th century, gaining popularity in the 1940s. It was invented in Arizona, with designs inspired by Native American and cowboy culture. Traditionally, bolo ties feature a braided leather cord with metal tips and a decorative clasp, often made of silver, turquoise, or other materials. But these days, bolos come just about any way you can imagine. Diamond studded, delicate gold chains, or adorned with an oversized Prada triangle logo. It's nice having options. Over the decades, they evolved from a regional accessory to a fashion statement. Today, the bolo tie is embraced in both casual and formal settings, reflecting a mix of tradition and contemporary fashion.

Bolos on the Runway

Louis Vuitton Fall Menswear 2024

We aren't the only ones who clocked the bolo tie. Several high-end designers have been incorporating bolo necklaces into their runway shows recently, reflecting a blend of classic Western influences with modern fashion. Notably, Givenchy has featured bolo necklaces in their collections, bringing a sophisticated, minimalistic twist to this traditionally Western accessory. Balenciaga also embraced the trend, integrating bolo necklaces with avant-garde styling to enhance their edgy, experimental looks. Louis Vuitton sent multiple bolos down the runway for their Fall Menswear 2024 show. These designers are redefining the bolo necklace, positioning it as a chic, versatile piece in contemporary fashion.

Western Wear in Pop Culture

left to right: Orville Peck, Beyoncé, Lil Nas X

Celebrities have heavy influence over the trend cycles of western wear. Some contemporary fashion icons and influencers have adopted bolo ties as part of their signature looks, further cementing their place in modern style. Lil Nas X in his Old Town Road music video was the first time I remember seeing a celeb sporting a bolo since the 80's. More recently, Beyoncé has significantly influenced the resurgence of Western wear in fashion with the release of Renaissance followed by Cowboy Carter. Through her music videos, stage performances, and public appearances, she has embraced and redefined Western-inspired styles, blending them with high fashion. Beyoncé’s use of cowboy hats, fringe, denim, bolos, and boots in her outfits has brought Western wear into the mainstream, making it glamorous and empowering. Another favorite of ours, Orville Peck, the masked country singer, has had a profound influence on the resurgence of Western wear, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community and alternative fashion circles. With his signature fringed masks, cowboy hats, and leather attire, Peck blends traditional Western elements with a modern, theatrical twist. His style pays homage to the classic cowboy image while challenging gender norms and embracing queer aesthetics.

Our take: The Infinity Bolo

That's right. Cold Gold designed a bolo of our very own. In true CG fashion, our Infinity Bolo is modern, elevated, and versatile. The adjustable slider bead paired with a thin box chain allows you to customize the length and fit, ensuring it complements any neckline and occasion. Whether you prefer a choker style, a longer, dramatic drape, a traditional, western bolo, or a layered look this necklace transforms to match your outfit and mood. The dainty, gold pendant drops are weighted to add the perfect drape and a refined finish. Ideal for layering with other necklaces or making a statement on its own, this versatile piece adapts to any occasion. Slide it. Wrap it. Double it. Tie it. The possibilities are infinite.

How to Style Bolo Necklaces

silver vs. gold chain necklace

Like we said... the possibilities are endless, but here are some of our favorite ways to style our Infinity Bolo.

This long chain necklace looks amazing with a deep plunging neckline. Try it with a deep v body suit or a buttoned blazer with no shirt underneath. The necklace could be worn slightly loosened, or you could take this opportunity wear it doubled and paired with your favorite layering necklaces. Ideally, delicate chains or charm necklaces.

Lean into the western look! Slide the adjustable bead to choker length and pair with a collared shirt, high waisted denim, and cowboy boots.

Dress it up or down. We can just as easily see this bolo being styled with a plain white tee, leather jacket, and denim as we can with a two piece suit.

In a world where fashion trends come and go, the bolo tie has made a surprising yet stylish comeback, proving that some classics never fade. Whether you're embracing it as a nod to Western heritage or as a bold statement piece in your modern wardrobe, the bolo tie offers endless versatility and charm. So, why not give it a try? You might just find that this vintage accessory adds the perfect touch of individuality to your look. After all, fashion is all about expressing yourself!
